Anna, Princess of Kiev

Anna, Princess of Kiev
Sister of Emperor Basil II who was married to Vladimir I of Kiev (qq.v.) in 988. She was a reward to Vladimir I for sending Varangians (q.v.) to aid Basil II in suppressing the revolts of Bardas Phokas and Bardas Skleros (qq.v.). However, Basil II stipulated that Vladimir convert, and, thus, Anna's marriage led to what is arguably the most significant single event in Russian history, the conversion of Vladimir I and of the Rus (q.v.).
